Shiney Folder Tutorial

Create a new document 400×300 with a white background, create a new layer called “folder”. Select the “pollygonal lasso tool” and make a selection like this.

Fill the selection in black then add these layer styles.

You should be left with this.

Create a new layer and name it “shine”, select the “rectangular marquee tool” and draw a selection like this.

Fill it with a white gradient.

Now with the “shine” layer still selected hold “ctrl” and click your folder layer. Now goto “select > inverse” and hit the delete key, you should be left with this.

Lower opacity to about 50-60%.

Select the “rectangular marquee tool” again and draw out a small rectangle UNDER YOUR FOLDER LAYER.

Fill with the color black, then “right-click” your “folder layer” and goto “copy layer style”. Then right click your new rectangle layer and goto “paste layer style” you should be left with this.

Press “ctrl + T” to free transform your rectangle, select the bottom middle anchor point and drag towards the right whilst holding “ctrl” on the keyboard. You should be left with this.

Thats it all done.

Userbar Tutorial

Create a new document 350×19 pixels, fill the background with a gradient of your choice.

Now we need to make a scanline pattern, to do this goto file new and create a new document 3×3 pixels, zoom in 1600%.

Now select the “pencil tool” with a “1 pixel brush” and draw a diagnal line like so.

Then goto “edit > define pattern”, click ok when the box pops up.

Back to your userbar, create a new layer then click your paint bucket tool. At the top of the screen in the paint bucket tool bar, change forground to pattern.

Then click the little arrow and select your pattern that we created in step 1.

Fill your new layer with your pattern and set opacity to 25%.

Search yahoo for a font called “vistor tt1 BRK”. Once you have your font type out your text (size 10), ive chosen to make a photoshop userbar. Ive also added some styles to my text which consists of a 1 pixel white stroke and a drop shadow.

Next add your logo.

Now select the “elliptical marquee tool” and make a selection like so.

Create a new layer and fill with the color white also set opacity to 25%. This is the final image.

Electric Text Tutorial

Create a new document 400×150 with a black background, select the type tool, and type out your text. Try and use a boldish font like impact or arial bold.

Right-click your text layer and goto “rasterize layer”, now duplicate this layer and hide the duplicated layer, we shall be using it at the end. your layers window should looke like this.

Select your original text layer and press “ctrl + e” to merge the layer with the background. Now goto “image > rotate canvas > 90 cw”.

Now goto “filter > stylize > wind” use settings below.

Now press “ctrl + f” to apply the filter again. You should have something like this.

Now goto “filter > stylize > wind” use settings below.

Now press “ctrl + f” to apply the filter again. You should have something like this.

Goto “image > rotate canvas > 90 ccw”, then press “ctrl + f” to apply the wind filter again.

Now goto “filter > stylize > wind” use settings below.

You should have something like this.

Press “ctrl + u” and colorize the image in a color of your choice.

Unhide your hidden text layer, then hold down “ctrl on the keyboard” and click your text layer to make a selection, then goto “select > modify > contract”. Contract the selection by 2 pixels. Select your paint bucket tool and fill the selection with the color black. Now finally click your background layer and goto “filter > disort > ripple” apply the pre-set settings. Your final image should look like this.

Windows Vista/XP Icons Tutorial

Create a new document 250×250, select the “elliptical marquee tool” and draw out a circle.

Fill with a “radial gradient” with your 2 chosen colors, ive chosen 2 shades of blue. (#295ea3 and #214b83).

Create a new layer under your blue circle (or wot ever color you have chosen). Hold down “ctrl” and click on your blue circle layer to make a selection. Then goto “select > modify > expand” expand it by 8 pixels. Now fill the selection with a grey color.

Now hold down “ctrl” again and click on the blue cirle to make a selection again, click on your grey circle layer and hit the delete key. If you hide your colored circle layer you should have this.

Now add these layer styles to your grey ring shape.

You should have something like this.

Now select the type tool, a nice bold font and a font size of about 200, then type your symbol ive used a “!” sign, you could also use a picture if you wanted.

Now right click your grey ring layer and goto “copy layer style”, then right click your text or logo layer and goto “paste layer style”, you text or logo should turn out like this.

Now select the “elliptical marquee tool” again and draw out a smaller circle at the top, and fill with the color white.

Set the opacity to 15% and add a layer mask.

Duplicate your layer, press “ctrl +t” to enter into free transform mode, resize your white circle, make it a bit bigger and place slighty above your other one.

Thats it all done, heres a few more.



Number Plate Tutorial

Create a new document, select the “rounded rectangle tool” and draw out a rectangle, color it black.

With the same tool draw out another rectangle but this time about 8 pixels smaller, color this #ddb105, place the layer over your black rectangle layer.

Select the rectangular marquee tool and make a selection on the yellow rectangle layer like so.

Press “ctrl + u” put a tick in the colorize box and select a light blue color using the sliders.

Add this layer style to your yellow/blue rectangle.

Add this layer style to your black rectangle.

You should be left with this.

Add your licence plate text.

Add these layer styles to your licence plate numbers/letters (not the GB sign).

You should have something like this.

And last but not least add the euro stars (search goole images). All done.

Album Cover Tutorial

Create a new document “640×480”, fill the background with a gradient. Select the “elliptical marquee tool” and draw out a circle, fill with any color.

Then goto “edit > transform > warp”, then click the drop down box at the top by “warp:” and select “shell upper”.

You will notice your cirle has now changed, and you should see an anchor point at the top.

Click the anchor point and drag down, untill you get this shape.

Now add these layer styles to the shape.

You should have something like this.

With the “elliptical marquee tool” again draw out another circle over your shape and add these layer styles.

You should have something like this.

Now press “ctrl” and click on your circle layer to select it. Then goto “select > modify > contract” contract the selection by 2 pixels. Now click your weird shapes layer and hit the delete key, you should be left with this. You will only see a slight change, but if you move your blue orb you will notice there is now a hole in your weird shape.

Select the “elliptical marquee tool” again and draw out a cirlce like the image below.

Set the opacity to about 30% also add a layer mask to blend it in.

Do the same as above again but make the cirle smaller and set opacity to 20%.

Now this album cover is going to be for a dance album, so ive searched google for a nice vector image and pasted it on my orb under my little white reflections layer that we made just. Ive also added an outerglow.

Duplicate your image and flip it vertically, add a layer mask to it to make a nice reflection.
If you dont no how to do reflections i suggest you try my reflections tutorial.

Its coming along nicely, lets add some text, select the type tool and add your album title and album artist. (see image below) Ive added a gradient overlay and a 2 pixel stroke to my text.

Thats it!, Althou you could take it one step further and make it your own by adding your own sort of style. Heres my finished version just to give you some ideas.

Portfolio Web Layout #2 Tutorial

Create a new document “850×650” pixels color the background with a gradient. ive uses #181818 and #5c5c5c. Drag the gradient from the top left corner to the bottom right corner.

Find a suitable narrow picture to fit the right hand side. Scale and crop if you have to.

Now under your picture, to keep the line going down create a rectange underneath using the “rectangular maquee tool”. Fill with the colour #181818, ive also added a small reflection, by duplicating the picture, flipping it vertically and adding a mask. If you dont no how to do reflections go HERE. Merge all the layers APART FROM THE BACKGROUND LAYER and add a 2 pixel stroke using the colour #595959. You should have something like this.

Lets add our title, select the type tool and type your site name, address and logo if needs be. See image below.

Lets also add out site section in a list below.

Now lets create some nice little cirlces to go by the side our menu. Select the “elliptical marquee tool” and draw out a circle, fill with an orange color, while it is still select goto “select > modify > contract” contract by about 4 pixels then hit the delete key. you should be left with this.

Still a little boring so add this layer style.

Your menu now should be like this.

Still needs something eles. Select the type tool and just type out a row of dots using the full stop button (……………….) duplicate many times and rotate them and place like so. Ive also added a slight layer mask to make it blend in more.

Now select the “rectangular marquee tool” and draw out 3 lines Colour the big one #606060 and the 2 little lines colour #ffa800.

Join them together, merge the layers and place like so, these will act as our dividers.

Add some menus above your dividers.

Thats it all done, and with some content it shall looks as stunning as the image below.

Pre-Site Enter Tutorial

Create a new document 800×600 pixels (or what ever size site your doing). Fill your background layer with a gradient.

Select the “elliptical marquee tool” and draw out a capsule like shape, fill it with the color white.

Apply the following layer styles to your capsule.

You should have something like this.

Create another capsule over the top of the capsule you just made but make it smaller, this will be a little light reflection. Color your capsule white.

Set the opacity to about 20% – 30%.

Then add a layer mask and make it blend in more.

Now lets add some text, type your text then drag your text layer under your light reflection layer (the smaller capsule).

Apply the following layer styles to your text.

You should have something like this.

Duplicate your text layer, flip it vertically and use it as a reflection, if you dont no how to do this, read throu my “reflections tutorial”. The end result is below.

Now duplicate your bigger capsule 4 times, Press “ctrl + t” to free transform them, resize them all making one big one going down in size to a small one. (see image below).

Do the same again but this time place them at the bottom of the capsule.

Thats it all done, now use your imagination and expand the idea into something of your own. Like this.

Youthfull Looking Skin Tutorial

Open up your photo, select the pen tool and draw around the whole face area, excluding vital features like eyes and mouth also dont get to close to the hair line.

Copy & paste your selection to a new layer, then goto “filter > blue > guassian blur” blur the layer by about 2 pixels if it looks over blurred then take it down to about 1 or 1.5.

Add a layer mask to your layer.

Select a reasonable brush size and the color black. Start to brush over things like the eyebrows, little bit of the hair line, nose holes, around the lips etc…, basically just vital features that make the face, ive also brushed over some facial lines. Heres mines.

Now the before and after.

Custom Brushes Tutorial

Create a new document any size, create a new layer and draw an object, color the object black.

Control click on your layer to select your object.

Goto “edit > copy” OR “ctrl + c”, then goto “file > new”, LEAVE ALL the settings apart from the background settings, change this to “transparent”.

Now once the new document has been created goto “edit > paste” OR “ctrl + v”.

Press “ctrl + a” to select all and goto “edit > define brush preset” label your new brush.

Now create a new document with your desired background color. Select the paint brush tool then click the menu at the top (see image below).

Select your brush and away you go.
